Gerald Dawavendewa (Hopi & Cherokee)

Surrounding the figure are a hand, Moon, and starburst, representing an explosion that appeared in the sky in 1054 CE, which created the Crab Nebula. Below is an ear of corn with a cloud design symbolizing agricultural knowledge. Across is a digging stick and gourd of water used in planting. Above a migration spiral, with four staff representing the four stages of life, the journey we all take. The figure symbolizes the ideals of proportions as the Italian artist Leonardo Da Vinci depicts in his drawing entitled “The Vitruvian Man.“

Elements of the cosmos surround the figure. Below, Tuuwaqatsi, the Earth travels with Muuyaw, the Moon, as the Milky Way travels beyond. Above two planets and Taawa, the sun journeys among the stars.

This artwork represents a long history of the Hopi people, creating an understanding of the cosmos.
